Electric Scooter Riding Tips for Beginners

Have you ever wondered: What should you pay attention to when riding an electric scooter for the first time as a beginner?

Let Kugoo help you answer this question!

Unlike traditional kick scooters, electric scooters are powered by a motor, so compared to traditional kick scooters, electric scooters can take you farther and provide you with better riding Experience. So, for beginners, how do we start our first ride?

1. Buy an electric scooter
When riding on the road, electric scooters are different from traditional kick scooters in that the weight of the motor and battery is not a negligible part of the electric scooter in order to allow the rider to go further. If you're buying an electric scooter for your daily commute, the lightweight and foldable 350W Kugoo S1 Pro will be a great helper to your commute. If you are a mountain scooter rider, then Kugoo G2 Pro with its large 800W motor and pneumatic trail tires is a great mountain electric scooter that you can't miss. Of course, you can also choose other electric scooters in our shop according to your needs. If you don't know how to choose, you can contact market@kugoo-scooter.com and we will help you make your choice.

2. Accessories
Obviously, before we start riding we need to wear safety equipment to ensure a safe ride, or at least we need to wear a helmet. After all, most countries or regions have issued laws or regulations requiring riders to wear helmets. It's worth trying a mid-range helmet as it's lighter, cooler and fits better than a cheap, uniform sized helmet. Also, you will need to prepare a lock to keep your electric scooter from getting lost when you don't need to ride it.

If you have sweaty hands, a pair of riding gloves is also worth buying. Although the handlebars of our Kugoo electric scooter are treated to be non-slip, wearing a pair of riding gloves will allow you to override your riding experience more comfortably. If you need to ride in the wilderness, then specialist cycling clothing can be considered. If you wish to enjoy music during your ride then don't forget to bring your small Bluetooth speakers (we don't recommend you wear headphones while riding).

3. Stay safe
Before you ride an electric scooter for the first time, you need to understand the relevant local laws and regulations to avoid riding to areas where electric scooters are prohibited without your knowledge. If you are cycling in the block, please follow local traffic laws at all times-this includes stopping completely at all stop signs and red lights (even when riding in groups), and using appropriate hand gestures when changing lanes or turning turns. Slow down. In addition, be sure not to ride your electric scooter on motor lanes. When encountering pedestrians or vehicles, please avoid them in time, and if necessary, stop and wait for the other person to pass first. If you are riding alone in the wild, please bring basic multi-function tools, ID, cash and mobile phone in case you need it. Although we don't want to admit it, sometimes not all rides go as planned-don't find yourself stuck on the side of the road after an accident, or unable to repair the machine without help.

In addition, the current global COVID-19 is not over. Please remember to wear a mask while wearing a helmet.

4. Accelerate slowly
When you ride an electric scooter for the first time, you may be very looking forward to experiencing the feeling of fast riding. It is worth noting that you need to accelerate slowly when you first start riding. You can adjust your speed by appropriately pressing the acceleration dial on the handlebar. Please do not increase the speed across gears, this is very dangerous for beginners of electric scooters, and you may fall.

Pro tip: Please keep the balance between the electric scooter and yourself during riding, and don't pinch the handlebars with excessive force. When you accelerate, place your weight on your back foot and use your back foot to help your body lean forward.

5. Turn cautiously
Just like riding a bicycle or driving a car, before we turn, we need to reduce the speed first, and then turn. Riding an electric scooter also requires the same operation. For a beginner who is riding an electric scooter for the first time, it may be difficult to control acceleration and deceleration freely. If you are not familiar with it, you can find an open area for practice before riding.

In addition, please do not suddenly turn the handlebar 90 degrees or greater when turning, so that you will easily fall or let the electric scooter lose control. When the driving speed drops to a certain level, you can slowly turn the handlebars to change the driving direction to prevent falling.

6. Brake smoothly
We often encounter situations where some cyclists or drivers make emergency braking. Sometimes emergency braking is actually a very dangerous operation. When riding an electric scooter, we must always pay attention to the road conditions around us, so that we can brake our electric scooter in advance when encountering a dangerous or emergency situation, instead of choosing an emergency brake. If you are riding an electric scooter very very fast, the braking distance of emergency braking will be longer than that of slow riding, and the inertia generated will be greater. If you happen to not maintain your balance, you are likely to fall off the electric scooter during emergency braking.

Most Kugoo electric scooters have disc brakes and foot brakes. Learning how to brake can make your riding experience smoother and reduce tire wear. Taking some time to practice how to brake is an essential step before you start riding for the first time.

7. Trust  yourself
Riding an electric scooter is not as difficult as we think. In fact, riding an electric scooter is easier than riding a bicycle. After all, when riding an electric scooter, we only need to press the acceleration button to keep the electric scooter in a forward state, but when riding a bicycle, we also need to use our feet to provide forward power.

Start your first ride, learn to keep your balance, and trust  yourself, you can do it!
